What an awful, heartbreaking loss to the greenlaning community this is. Due to the actions of some utter filth which were severe enough to make the national press (Daily Telegraph, Dec 28th, 2002) we have lost access to this '5-rated' byway. According to the Isle of Wight 4x4 Club, it is now illegal to drive a motorised vehicle on this awesome, 10-mile-long trail unless you hold a disabled 'blue' badge, or a taxi license, or drive a ‘community vehicle’ (whatever that is. Sunshine Bus maybe?).

Thus, this wonderful, 10-mile-long byway between Freshwater and Carisbrooke is now subject to a TRO. And that's not all: every byway on the Isle of Wight is also subject to a TRO between 30th Sept and 1st April to mitigate damage to the surface of the green lanes, no doubt instigated as a reaction to the activities of these fools. If you are going to visit, do so in summer and prepare to be very disappointed!

The idiots, it seems, have won this fight.

A loss keenly felt.

Move along, unless you want to park up and have a walk around the extremely beautiful Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve (and you should!).

This barrier is enforcing the TRO.

  • ALWAYS follow the Greenlane Code!
This byway is currently subject to a TRO and as such is closed to motorised traffic. Motorised traffic, that is, unless you happen to ride a trail bike, in which case it is wide open to you! Apparently this is because there is a bridge in pretty poor nick which a fair bit of work doing to it before it is made safe for heavier vehicles such as 4x4's. As such the byway is closed for 9 months from 12/12/2014. Time will tell if it ever re-opens, but we are sceptical! Avoid for now.

Just down the A275 to the south, the lovely and ancient town of Lewes is well worth exploring, and nearby to the byway lie Lewes Castle and the site of the nationally important Battle Of Lewes (1264). The museum in the castle has more information and is well worth checking out. The town also has a great many pubs, almost all of which are just awesome so we shan't recommend any particular one: try your luck! Ale aficionados can do far worse than have a tour of Harveys Brewery but, be warned: the waiting list for a tour is over two years long!.

To ESCC this is Chailey Byway 8.

A weird one this: it is not subject to a TRO (certainly not the BOAT section, anyway) but even so the UCR section at the far western end is protected by a locked gate. It may be that the UCR never held vehicular rights and as such we have no right of access, or it may be that the land owner simply doesn't like 'intruders', but pending further investigation this byway is essentially a dead end and closed to traffic.

To Hampshire County Council these are Byways 16 & 37, combined here for convenience.

Although the sign on the gate guarding this byway says it is subject to a seasonal TRO, on two separate visits within the designated 'open' period this gate has still been padlocked shut. As such, it is closed to motorised traffic despite not technically being subject to a full TRO. East Sussex County Council's website offers little more information, either.

We named the green lane after the farms it serves in the absence any evidence for their 'proper' names. If you have any information on this, please comment below.

Updated 19/12/2017:

Closed by TRO, briefly re-opened, and then swiftly re-closed permanently at the end of 2017, this byway (part of the Oxdrove Way) has been lost to us through the idiotic actions of the foolish, ignorant minority. A real shame though, as along with Jennie Green LaneBullfield Lane and Rushmoor Lane this used to be a great little network of byways that we called the 'Rushmoor Pond Network'. It's now gated off and is closed to all vehicles.

Update 21.08.15: A permanent MPV TRO is planned for this road, so I guess that's that for us!
We wish the best of luck to the Trail Rider's Fellowship in their quest to oppose this measure!

This byway is subject to a TRO, and not just any TRO, but a 'super-TRO'. It's closed to absolutely everyone, even pedestrians! I shudder to think what precedent that sets... A real shame though, as along with Jennie Green LaneBullfield Lane and Dirty Lane this used to be a great little network of byways that we called the 'Rushmoor Pond Network'. It's gated off and is closed to vehicles until at least the 30th May 2013. What happens after that remains to be seen, but we shall keep our ear to the ground.

This lane is subject to a TRO. A real shame, that, as along with Jennie Green Lane, Rushmoor Lane and Dirty Lane this used to be a great little network of byways that we called the 'Rushmoor Pond Network'. However, although we knew Bullfield Lane has always had a TRO on it, by the time we actually got around to coming back to review the lanes in this immediate area they have since been subject to a TRO, gated off, and are closed to vehicles until at least the 30th May 2013.
