This lane starts and ends on tarmac in the middle of housing, but don't that put you off! This really is a quality lane, with it's only fault being that it is not long enough.

We drove from south to north. Beware of the particularly harsh turning onto this lane from Fox Corner at the southern end of the BOAT; at busy times of the day the traffic can be quite bad on this sharp bend. Also, make sure you take the right entrance! Although it's clearly signposted as a public byway, there are actually four options to choose from. Malthouse Lane, when travelling from Worpleson, is at your 1 o'clock.

As already mentioned, the lane is initially tarmac. This soon gives way to a mixture of earth and sand when you cross over into Pirbright Common, and at the time of year we drove it (mid October) it was covered in fallen leaves. Those with road tyres could find it a problem to get traction in very wet weather therefore. The lane is otherwise almost dead straight, very flat, completely unrutted and therefore poses little challenge, and is all the better for it. It is a little tight however, and long vehicles (eg a Defender 130) would have to go with care on some of the lane's gentle twists and turns.

This woodland stretch, which forms 3/4 of the lane's length, really is a very pleasant drive indeed, especially at the time of day that we drove it with a low winter sun streaming through the trees. Malthouse Lane changes to a UCR as it exits Pirbright Common and the surface changes back to tarmac to finish off a great lane. It comes highly recommended.

Just took a little drive down through here on a wet October day. A little over grown with plenty of goarse and branches to squeal on the paintwork - so not sure it's still a 5. Had to "abate" a log. Some deep ruts forming in places with some water, which would ground out anything with normal road car clearances. But, in relatively good condition, IMHO.
